BENIGNO V. ALDANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL:
OFFICE OF THE
PRINCIPAL IN FOCUS
Benigno V. Aldana National High School (BVANHS) has
its name changed five times and handled
by different principals since 1946.
TELESFORO C.
QUINTO
1946-1947
Described as Captain America due to his resemblance to
the movie hero of the Americans during that time, Mr. Telesforo Enrique became the first principal of Pozorrubio
Junior High School. He was not a resident of Pozorrubio, but he hailed from
Lingayen, Pangasinan. He was tall with a distinct soft voice. He served as the principal
for a full year.
CANDELARIO C.
QUINTO
1947-1952
After
returning to his hometown, Mr. Enrique was succeeded by Mr. Candelario C. Quinto from 1947-1952. It was during the time of
Mr. Quinto that the word, Junior, was dropped from name of the school in 1948
thereby giving it a mature existence. After serving for five years, he left the
school for St. Philomena’s Academy (SPA), a Catholic-run private school in town,
as the school principal.
NUMERIANO M.
VINLUAN
1952-1967
“
Sak-sakey so matak, saksakey so salitak!” (
I only have one eye, thus, I have one word!). This expression made Mr. Numeriano Mac. Vinluan popular
among people who knew him well and it even became a byword associated to him in
public. As a principal, he was known to be strict,
intelligent, and truly a “one-word man”. During his term from 1952-1957, he initiated
more programs and campus journalism was one of them. It became one of his
flagship programs that made Pozorrubio High School catapulted to the national
scene. The Landscape, the name of the school paper that succeeded The Sierras,
the official student publication at the time of Mr. Quinto, brought Pozorrubio National High in pedestals as it
reaped consistent national awards under Mr. Eul Mendoza who served as the school paper
adviser of The Landscape.
BRIGIDA Q. MAGNO
1967-1973
After
the retirement of Mr. Vinluan, Mrs.
Brigida Q. Magno took the helm of leadership. As a former Home Economics
teacher, among her pet projects was the construction of the Home Economics
Building. Her being active as the faculty president led her to the position.
She was the first lady principal of the school. However, she gave way to an
agriculture teacher to take over the management of the school.
ORLANDO P. PEREZ
October 1973- November 2001
Mr. Orlando P. Perez of Alcala,
Pangasinan who succeeded Mrs. Magno became the longest serving principal of
this school from October 16, 1973 to November 2001. However, he started first
as classroom teacher from October 28,1958 to December 30,1969. From January
1,1970 to October 15,1973 he served as Assistant Secondary School Principal. He
was promoted as Principal 1 from October 16,1973 to June 30,1974. He held his
position as Principal II from July 1,1974 to November 2001.
It was during his term that the name of the school had
a series of changes from Pozorrubio High School to Pozorrubio National High
School. Then, the school’s name was changed to Benigno V. Aldana National
Memorial High School. Later, the word “Memorial” was eventually dropped leaving
the official name, Benigno V. Aldana National High School which is the official
name of the school until to this day.
Mr.
Perez was a man of contrast. He was both loved and hated because of his being
strict, uncompromising, and outrageously demanding for discipline, obedience, dedication
to work, cleanliness, and love for the school. During his term, the construction of school buildings boomed. Being a former agriculture teacher and
environmentalist at heart, he was the reason why this school has a lot of trees
all over the campus. It was also during his term that the school became known
in the field of campus journalism. The school became perennial winners and in
many cases became an over-all champion in the Division School Press Conference giving them an outright spot
in the Regional School Press Conference and National School Press Conference.
He was usually misunderstood in the way he managed and treated the teaching and
non-teaching staff, but at home he was a loving husband and a father to his
children. He was a different man when he was at home, but a stern leader in
school.
DR. ALFREDO S.
CALUGAY
2001-2004
After
the retirement of Mr. Perez, Dr. Alfredo S. Calugay of Urbiztondo, Pangasinan returned
home to BVANHS after his stint as the principal of Balungao National High
School. Before that, Dr. Calugay was a former teacher of Saint Philomena’s
Academy (SPA) for years before joining BVANHS. While teaching in this school, he
was then the adviser of Drum and Lyre Corp and Student Government Organization
(SGO). A dramatic turn of events in 2004 led to his transfer to San Jacinto
National High School (SJNHS). From SJNHS, he was assigned at the Division
Office as Araling Panlipunan coordinator and eventually, he was promoted as
Education Program Supervisor 1 of the same subject area.
While
waiting for the successor of Dr. Calugay, the following personalities had the
chance to lead BVANHS: Mrs. Juliana B. Laoag, Schools Division Superintendent,
Dr. Imelda Navarro, Atty. Donato Balderas, Assistant Schools Division
Superintendent, and Dr, Agnes Raguinan.
DR. ROBERTO B.
QUEZON
2009-2022
At
first, Dr. Roberto B. Quezon held the position of Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of
the Office of the Principal IV in 2006. He was the first alumnus to serve the
school as the OIC-Principal. Prior to his assignment in his Alma Mater, he was
the principal of Eugenio P. Perez National High School, Brgy. Villegas,
Pozorrubio, Pangasinan from June 21, 1995 to February 27, 2002. From
Pozorrubio, he was promoted and transferred as Principal II to La Paz National
High School, Umingan, Pangasinan from February 28, 2002 to December 9, 2007. He
was eventually promoted to Principal IV in the same school from December
10,2007 to March 15,2009. With his ardent desire to serve his Alma Mater, he
went back to BVANHS as Principal IV. He was the second longest serving
principal of BVANHS from March 16,2009 to December 2022. During his term, the
school wall was built which has ensured the protection and safety of the school
from outsiders. Notable achievement of Dr. Quezon was the opening of the Senior
High School despite the absence of school buildings on June 2016. The birth pain of opening
the senior high school has been experienced by both senior high school teachers
and their students. They seemed to be
“nomads” inside the school as they held their classes under the trees, along
the corridor, and had to look for rooms during vacant periods of the junior
high school teachers. At aged 63, Dr. Quezon had to retire unexpectedly in
December 2022 due to his health condition.
DR. JEROME S.
PARAS
January 2023- November 2023
Taking
the helm of leadership for BVANHS is Dr. Jerome S. Paras, a former Education
Program Supervisor (EPS) for Araling Panlipunan of Pangasinan Division II. Dr.
Paras is an alumnus of BVANHS, Batch 1989. However, he also served in his
capacity as the former Head Teacher of Araling Panlipunan Department in this
institution from August 19,2009 to August 30, 2011 until he was promoted as the
principal of Palguyod National High School, a 189 nationalized school in
Pozorrubio, from August 31,2011 to October 17, 2012. After serving Palguyod
National High School, he was promoted from Principal II to Principal IV while
at Manaoag National High School from October 18, 2012 to June 13,2016. He was
promoted as Education Program Supervisor from June 14,2017 to January 8,2023. Due
to his ardent desire to serve his fellow Pozorrubians and love for his Alma
Mater, BVANHS, he returned to Pozorrubio as the Principal IV. It was a big
decision to leave his post as Education Program Supervisor of Araling Panlipun
and chose a greater purpose in life, that is, to share his vision and mission
of making his Alma Mater proud and great again. In his capacity as the new
principal of this school, great things had happened in terms of infrastructure.
In less than a year of his stay in this school, he had transformed BVANHS. He
renovated the Administration Building and gave it a new look. The Office of the
Principal before has become a Conference Room which serves as a venue for
meetings and conference among department heads, student leaders, PTA officers,
and internal/external stakeholders. He also renovated the comfort rooms of the
Administration Building making it really a comfortable place to ease ourselves
from the call of nature. From the time of the construction of the Parent-Teacher
Association (PTA) Hall, finally its flooring has been covered with tiles. Other
projects under Dr. Paras were: the construction of the main entrance gate and
another gate adjacent to the main entrance gate; the construction of a new flag
pole in front of the stage; the transfer of the bust of Dr. Benigno V. Aldana;
renovations of the two rooms Araling Panlipunan Department and the MAPEH
Building; repainting of the Administration Building; Junior High School
Library, English Department Building and others. At present, Dr. Paras has been
installed as the new Public Schools District Supervisor of Mangaldan District 1
recently.
OFFICERS-IN CHARGE
Dr.
Redentor B. Aquino, who Is
the Chief Education Supervisor of Pangasinan II, sgod, served as the OIC-
Office of the Principal IV from December
2023 until January 2024.
